SUMMARY OF THE REPORT
Sections of
the Summary:
1. Do you
feel affected by the idea of objectified beauty/masculinity?
2. Do you
feel happy with physical body?
3. Which
part of body you feel dissatisfied with?
4. Which
kind of means do you think had massively promote perfection?
5. Do you
feel or find yourself with emotional or behavioral disorder dealing the
objectified concept of beauty/ masculinity?
6. Comments
of the Respondents (Let’s read)
For the past few years,
the idea of beauty and masculinity have been introduced into the society either
through expressed or implied meaning. Many advertisements in television,
Instagram, Facebook and any other promoting aids impliedly convey that beauty
is must be within the limit such a person must has a fair skin, white skin,
reddish lips, shaped eyebrow, pointed nose, tall and curved body for female
while for men, muscled body and moustache with a good height shows masculinity.
The first question here is whether the people in the society were affected or not by the flow of ideas brought by the media? How about people who are not born with the characteristics below as said by the media? Are they been affected in their psychology such as lower self-esteem due to not feeling confident with their present body and face?
Idea is a kind of
thought or the conception of mind that introduced into the public. When it is related
to mind, it also related to the way of thinking. Sometimes, idea can be good,
sometimes, it is harmful because it affects on how people going to perceive
something by their senses. It construct the mind of people through thinking,
generalizing and creating a new phenomenon that keep happening around the
society.
So, I conducted an
online survey to get to know the insight of the people on how they see the
up-dated phenomenon like fashion, make-up, and vogue, six packs abs and
muscular biceps, good height and how they feel about themselves while living in
the prime flow of the phenomenon?
Do you feel affected by the idea of objectified
beauty/masculinity?
The number of the respondents that answered my online survey are 110
respondents with 86 females and 24 males. Among the 110 respondents, 76% agreed
they are affected by the current massive ideas of the objectified beauty and
masculinity while 24% said otherwise.
No one would admit they are affected or not in the middle of normal conversation or voicing their thought about this issue, but in fact this is what people really think of it, something they keep silent of.
They are
three types of people: When they see or hear something that conveyed messages,
First type: They can completely ignored the message
if it is unpleasant for them to analyze.
Second type: They feel it is related to them.
Sometimes, they think about it and sometimes not.
Third type: They fully think about it in a complete
picture.
From the pie chart above, we can see
that it is more than half of the 110 respondents feel affected by the idea of beauty
and masculinity. In other words, the said idea is successfully brought to the
mind of the respondents through what they hear and see.

Which part of body you feel dissatisfied with?
The later question I asked in my survey form is “Which
parts of body you feel dissatisfied?” There were multiple answers, but only one
can be chosen.
Among the choices of answers are: a) Face
b) Body
c) Body and Face
d) None
It is human nature. They do feel satisfied
and dissatisfied in something including their physical appearance which they
render it is not too interesting or something had abstain them from going above
the standard. If we look carefully, there are many factors why people feel dissatisfied
with their face. The factors can be natural
factors and external factors.
The
natural factors for face includes, scars, blemishes and others
irregularities caused by hormonal imbalance, stress etc. while external
factors are influenced by the surrounding :face full with pimples and scars
due to lack of care, social medias, and how a person perceive the
concept of beauty. A female may feel dissatisfied of herself if she did
not has a pointed nose, reddish lips, symmetrical face and jawlines and many
more which the worldwide assume those features are beautiful.
The
external factors for body includes having a very skinny body
and overweight body which is a changing variable while the natural
factor is, first, the shape of one’s body such a female has a pear
shape or maybe a time-glass which she did not adore it much and hoping of
getting another type of body shape. For male, he may has a bigger top with
small lower (V-shape) and other males have a straight type and many more. The
second one, inherited genes where a person is born with and together with
him a fix DNA that shaped his physical look. Both parents are too skinny or
fat, may produce the same type of offspring of how the parents were. The
possibilities of having a fat offspring is high if the mother has diabetes.

worry and dissatisfied over their body rather than body and face.
Which kind of mediums do you think massively promote perfection in beauty/masculinity?
Which kind of mediums do you think massively promote perfection in beauty/masculinity?
This is the
eighth question in the survey form. Generally, social media used to connect
people but due to great development of a nation and burst of ideas on business
strategies, social media is not only use to promote connectivity with people
but also to promote business, serve some entertainment, promote awareness on
some arising issues and many more.
Apps like
Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and etc. opened the door for almost a real-virtual
life updates, photos and videos. Television is the most widespread technology
used by global-to-nations with limited control only by the production body,
advertising the current flows of updated modern fashion, lifestyles and also
impliedly promote the objectified concept of beautiful and masculinity.
Absolutely, some persons will be affected by the narrowed concept of beautiful,
whether it is female or male, they have the eyes and ability to think and
evaluate what kind of means that have affected them.

Discussion
on kind of means that promote perfection (Beauty and Masculinity. (See the PDF version in the link)
BEGINNING OF CONCEPT MAKING
As
in the 21st century, we are all grown up with the well-known concept
of beauty/masculinity through the advertised examples and icons from
television, newspaper, internet, magazines and many more. In other words,
nowadays there are many kinds of medium that allow the spread of ideas and
information. Back to our grandfather’s era, newspaper was the only functioning
and powerful black and white medium to convey messages or ideas of
independence. There were very least number of conception ideas during that
time.
As
the television were widely used, people begin to promote their business through
advertisement equipped with sound, good lighting and motions. So, how the
concept of beauty and masculinity was introduced at the first place? It is
how the storylines of the advertisement are made with. For example, in most
face-related advertisement, there are always hundreds of questions quoted like..
“Wish to stay beautiful?”“Wishing for a fair skin?”
“Pimples are so embarassing!”
...and many more. Even some scenarios are demonstrated with the
effect of having some kind of specific colour of skin such as feeling not
confident, embarrassed with their face and not getting attention by the
colleagues and also the effect of having face with pimples such as guys did not
attracted to them, when the pimples vanished, all guys are interested with the
girl, feeling not confident and embarrassed. Most of the female models used in
the advertisement are white in skin colour. We could say maybe none of the
models used are black in skin colour. This is what we call as the absorption of
subliminal messages. It educate people what is beautiful and what is not,
without they realize.
Do you feel or find yourself with emotional or disorder dealing with the objecstified beauty/masculinity?

next behavior is the feeling of disappointment of why they do not own a good
body, then, the feeling of embarrassment one felt with their physical body and
lastly, other which stated by the respondent being Ok for sometimes, and
sometimes not.
Let see the
comments of the respondents:
1. Each and everyone have their own value and beauty.
Feeling envy to be better is good but not harm your body.
2. Well, it has the pro and cons, the pro is, i am
motivated to get a healthy body, the cons is i lack the confidence to be myself
3. People (including me) should be thankful as we
still can live our life with our current physical condition. Alhamdulillah ;)
4. I feel the need to achieve the perfection in beauty
to feel secure in current society.
5. Everyone has their own beauty and perfection. Be
grateful anyway as long as we live our life to the fullest. Allah knows best !
6. Concept of perfection is needed for personal
satisfaction. Based on this questionaire i'm guessing the main concern is the
concept of perfection being applied to physical appearance. Basically, beauty
is subjective and vary between people. E.g, most see 'A' to be physically
perfect though there are still some seeing 'A' as normal and average. The point
i'm trying to stress here is that do not blame the concept of perfect but blame
it on the stereotypes created around the concept.
7. Every individual deserve to set their own ideal
image of themselves but not to the extent, it hurts their self-esteem. Just be
yourself.
8. The society needs to stop fat & skinny-shaming.
EVERYONE HAS FLAWS!
9. Society needs to know that nobody's perfect. Even
models are photoshopped.
10. To me beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. It
simple yet makes you happy.
11. The stereotype for those who beautiful or not
seems to be impossible to be cleared from the mind of society. BIG influence
from media, cannot control. I fine with myself but really pity for those going
crazy and so craving on beauty until they harm themselves.
12. I think mindset of malaysian should be improved
because they define beauty is who have slim body and white without pimple on
face.
13. Nak kurus. Xnak gemuk 😭
14. Be thankful with our body that He has created.
Strive to have healthy & normal BMI
15. Stop looking for perfection, because no one is
perfect. Even dettol only kills 99.9 germs 😆
16. I keep trying to find ways to make my face clear
but fail
17. All people want to be pretty & beautiful but
nowadays the concept of perfection has made other people suffer. Its good to be
pretty but do mind your health also 😊
18. I think it's sad that how nowadays people define
beauty or perfection as someone that has whiter and clearer skin or having a
perfect body. Maybe that's why today, there are so many beauty products sell at
the markets. Because everyone wants to be beautiful. Everybody wants to fit in.
19. I’ve been fine with my body before i started my
participation in the social medias. But after having my own ig account, my
views were slightly affected by the goals and expectations thats all scattered around
the social medias. I have to constantly remind myself that its not always right
; which is a problem because we tend to remind ourselves of the things that we
are in doubts(which in this case is the subjectivity of beauty and perfection)
20. We need to accept ourselves first,to be accepted
by others. Just confident with our own beauty.
21. But dont be obese or have high fat content,
cardiovascular/health problem is not pretty
22. Social media really affected our local society on definition
of the concept of beauty. But, not every definitions that came from western in
consistence with the teaching of Islam. I think that our islamic scholars or
anyone that have the right knowledge of this concept should be clarify this
concept to our society. To clarify that a tough body or white skin and what not
don't guarantee us to be in the paradise.
